Dropped & misaligned doors

A door that scrapes, catches or needs a shove to lock has usually dropped. We lift it, re-pack it and adjust it.

Typical visit

Usually one visit of about an hour.

AWhat you notice

  • The bottom of the door scrapes the threshold
  • There’s a gap at the top corner on the handle side, wider than on the hinge side
  • You have to lift the handle hard, or push the door, before it will lock
  • You can feel a draught or see daylight round one corner
  • The door only shuts properly if you slam it

BLikely causes

  • The hinges have worn or slipped, so the door sits lower on the lock side
  • The glass or panel wasn’t packed properly inside the door, so it sags over time
  • Years of slamming, or a heavy door on light-duty hinges
  • Hot weather. uPVC expands in the sun, and dark-coloured doors move the most.

CHow we fix it

  • We adjust the hinges for height, side-to-side position and how tightly the door pulls against its seals
  • If the door has sagged, we take off the beads and re-pack the glass or panel to lift it back square (toe and heel packing)
  • We reset the keeps on the frame so the hooks and rollers engage without force
  • If the hinges have no adjustment left, or are worn, we replace them
Before we visit

Worth knowing

Get a dropped door seen to early. Forcing the handle to lock it is the most common reason gearboxes break.

If the door only catches on hot afternoons, tell us. It may be expansion in the heat rather than a dropped door, and we set it up to allow for that.

A photo of the closed door, showing the gaps round the top corners, helps us see how far it has dropped.

Questions

Common questions

Will I need a new door?

Rarely. Most dropped doors can be re-packed and adjusted in one visit, as long as the door and frame aren’t damaged.

Can I adjust the hinges myself?

Many uPVC door hinges have adjustment screws under a cover cap. Small turns make a big difference, so go a little at a time. If the door has dropped because the glass has slipped, hinge adjustment alone won’t hold for long.
