Typical visit

Usually one visit, even for a whole house.

AWhat you notice

  • You have young children and upstairs windows that open wide
  • Window handles that don’t lock
  • A bedroom window that doesn’t open wide enough to climb out in a fire
  • Old euro cylinders that aren’t anti-snap
  • No way to see who’s at the door before you open it

BLikely causes

  • The original fittings were basic, or have worn
  • Things have changed at home, such as a new baby, a lodger or a new tenancy
  • Your insurer has asked for better locks on the outside doors

CHow we fix it

  • We fit cable or catch restrictors that stop a window opening more than about 100 mm, and that an adult can release
  • Window handles replaced with key-locking or push-button locking handles
  • Egress hinges fitted on escape windows
  • Door cylinders upgraded to TS 007 3-star or SS 312 Diamond
  • Door viewers and door chains fitted

Worth knowing

Restrictors on escape windows must be releasable without a key, so an adult can still open the window fully in an emergency.

Keep keys for locking window handles where every adult in the house knows to find them, but out of children’s reach.

Check your home insurance wording. Some policies state the standard of lock they expect on outside doors.

Questions

Common questions

Do restrictors stop a window being an escape route?

Not if they’re the right type. Choose restrictors that an adult can release quickly without a key.

What size does an escape window need to be?

The clear opening must be at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm wide and 450 mm high, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. Egress hinges help a window open wide enough to meet this.

Will key-locking handles stop a window being used for escape?

They can, if the key isn’t to hand. On an escape window, keep the key close by, or choose a push-button handle that locks without a key.
