Door locks & mechanisms
Handle won’t lift, key won’t turn or the door won’t lock. We repair gearboxes, multipoint locks and cylinders.
Typical visit
Most lock repairs are done in one visit if we can identify the part from your photos first. An uncommon lock may need a second visit once the part arrives.
AWhat you notice
- You have to lean on the door or force the handle up to lock it
- The handle has gone floppy, or doesn’t spring back level
- The key is stiff, only turns part way, or won’t turn at all
- The key turns round and round but nothing locks
- The door won’t open even though it’s unlocked
- The handle lifts but the hooks or bolts don’t come out of the door edge
BLikely causes
- The door has dropped, so the hooks and rollers no longer line up with the keeps on the frame
- The gearbox in the middle of the lock has worn out or broken inside, often after years of forcing the handle
- A snapped part in the multipoint lock, such as a hook, a roller or a connecting rod
- A worn euro cylinder, or an older one that was never anti-snap
- A broken spring in the handle, which leaves it drooping
CHow we fix it
- We work out whether the fault is alignment, the gearbox, the lock strip or the cylinder before we replace anything
- We fit a new gearbox or a full multipoint lock, matched to the make and size of the one in your door
- Cylinders are upgraded to anti-snap, rated TS 007 3-star or SS 312 Diamond, and sized to suit your door
- We adjust the keeps and hinges so the new lock works with light pressure on the handle
- Worn or broken door handles replaced at the same visit
Worth knowing
Don’t force a stiff handle. It’s the most common way gearboxes break, and the real cause is often a dropped door.
Twice a year, spray the hooks, rollers and keeps with a silicone or PTFE lubricant.
Send a photo of the door edge where the metal lock strip is. The maker’s name is often stamped on the faceplate, which helps us bring the right part.
To measure a euro cylinder, measure from the centre fixing screw to each end. A 35/45 cylinder is 35 mm on one side and 45 mm on the other.
Common questions
Can you just replace the gearbox?
Often, yes. If the hooks, rollers and rods are in good order, a new centre gearbox fixes the problem and costs less than a full multipoint lock.
What cylinder should I have?
An anti-snap euro cylinder rated TS 007 3-star or SS 312 Diamond. Some insurers ask for one of these, so check your policy wording.
Why does my key turn but the door doesn’t lock?
Usually the cam on the back of the cylinder or the gearbox inside the door has failed. A cylinder is a quick swap. A failed gearbox needs replacing as well. We check which it is before ordering parts.
