uPVC repairs
Glass & door panel replacement
Cracked or smashed glass, privacy glass for a bathroom or front door, and new uPVC door panels.
Typical visit
One visit to measure, and make safe if needed. A second visit to fit once the glass or panel is made.
AWhat you notice
- A crack or break in either pane of glass
- A door panel that’s cracked, dented or faded
- You want obscure (frosted) glass for a bathroom, landing or front door
- Glass low down or next to a door that isn’t safety glass
- Decorative or leaded glass you want replaced or removed
BLikely causes
- Impact, such as a ball, a stone thrown up by a strimmer, or an attempted break-in
- Thermal stress. These cracks usually start at the edge of the glass and run in at a right angle to it.
- Older door panels that have yellowed, faded or been damaged
CHow we fix it
- If the glass is broken, we make the opening safe on the first visit where needed
- We measure and order a new sealed unit or door panel made to size
- New glass is toughened or laminated wherever Approved Document K calls for safety glass
- We fit it with the correct packers and beads so the window or door stays square
- uPVC door panels replaced with new glazed or solid designs that fit your existing door
Worth knowing
If glass is broken, keep children and pets away. Tape over cracks and sharp edges, and don’t pull loose pieces out.
If you’re insured, check whether accidental damage to glass is covered before you book.
Toughened glass usually has a small mark etched in one corner. Check for it if you’re not sure what you have.
Common questions
Where does safety glass have to be used?
Under Approved Document K, in doors and in any glass within 300 mm of a door, up to 1,500 mm above the floor. It is also needed in any glass within 800 mm of the floor.
Can I swap clear glass for frosted?
Yes. We replace the sealed unit with obscure glass in the pattern you choose. The frame stays as it is.
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass breaks into small, blunt pieces. Laminated glass has a plastic layer inside that holds the pieces together when it breaks, which also makes it harder to get through.
