Handles & hinges
Windows that drop, slam or won’t stay open, and handles that are loose or snapped. Hinges and handles replaced.
Typical visit
Usually one visit. Large or uncommon hinges are ordered after we measure and fitted on a second visit.
AWhat you notice
- The window slams shut in the wind or won’t stay open
- You have to lift the window to close it, or it scrapes on the frame
- The handle is loose, cracked, or spins without locking
- The window feels heavy, or drops at one corner when you open it
- A hinge looks bent, or its screws are pulling out
BLikely causes
- Friction hinges (also called friction stays) wear out, especially on wide or heavy windows
- Hinge screws have worked loose or pulled out of the frame
- The square spindle on the handle has snapped, or the locking gear in the frame has failed
- Grit in the hinge tracks, or a window caught by strong wind while open
CHow we fix it
- We replace friction hinges with the right length, stack height and weight rating for your window
- Window handles replaced like for like, or upgraded to key-locking handles
- Egress (fire escape) and easy-clean hinges fitted where you need them
- Door hinges, including flag, butt and adjustable types, replaced or adjusted
- Restrictors fitted where you want to limit how far a window opens
Worth knowing
Measure the hinge from end to end with the window closed and send us a photo. Friction hinges come in set lengths, so this tells us which one to bring.
For a window handle, tell us whether it locks with a key and measure the square spindle at the back. Spindles come in different lengths.
Keep hinge tracks free of grit and give them a light spray of lubricant once or twice a year.
Common questions
My window is on the first floor. Is it safe to use?
If the window feels loose, drops or doesn’t sit square, keep it shut and locked until it’s repaired. A failed hinge on an upper floor can let the window swing free or fall.
What is an easy-clean hinge?
As the window opens, the hinge slides the opening part across and leaves a gap on the hinge side. You can then reach the outside of the glass from indoors, which helps on upstairs windows.
Do I need egress hinges?
If the window is the escape route from a room, egress hinges help it open wide enough. An escape window needs a clear opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm wide and 450 mm high, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor.
